Spain’s Facebook competitor Tuenti, after being acquired by Telefonica, is launching an invitation only mobile operator with unlimited calling to friends on Tuenti for 10 euros a month. This is a smart move that Facebook cannot easily match. Also Tuenti has cornered the 15 to 25 demographics and this is the one group that Telefonica has lost and Facebook has not been able to capture. In...

Here in Berlin there’s a big anti nuclear demonstration today. Germany in general is at an all anti nuclear energy sentiment these days. I agree with the writer. If a 1970’s plant with obsolete design hit by earthquake and tsunami still has not released lethal dosis of radiation nuclear plants designed today in non seismic areas are safe.

First time I see data of how much WiFi iphone owners use in USA. The article points out that Verizon iPhone owners use less WiFi but as CEO of Fon what I found remarkable is that for a product that is sold with a high monthly subscription for cellular that so much of the usage be WiFi. That is probably because cellular is what you use when you cannot find WiFi. Here’s the info...

Enough bad news on Japan, here are some good news
Fon has the largest WiFi network in Japan.  As opposed to commercial WiFi networks the Fon network is built by its users.  In Japan people buy our routers, many of which come bundled with the iPhone and other smartphones, and connect them at their home fiber, DSL or cable internet connections.  Our routers, have the unique feature of creating two wifi networks, one for you and one for the...

Gaddafi is evil, a horrible person. We know that. But Gaddafi is also very smart. And all of us in Europe and USA who have started a military campaign in Europe should be well aware of that. What I am afraid Gaddafi will do is that he will take the uniforms off his army and send them as paramilitary (as South American dictators, Chavez included do). He will send them to intimidate and...

@ninavarsavsky asks me why I write a post about Fukushima if I am not an expert. I answer that I write it because I am an entrepreneur and that is what tech entrepreneurs do, we guess, we make a career out of guessing into fields nobody really knows what the true answer will be. We read, we study, we talk to people, and we combine all that with a strong sense of intuition. In this case I have...

Unlike most, I don’t think that the worst is yet to come in Japan. Based on what I read, I believe that what we have seen so far is very likely going to be the most or all the damage there is going to be out of the earthquake and tsunami. And that is a already a lot, with maybe 15K people dead, half a million homeless, $200bn in damage. But I think it is very unlikely that anyone in Tokyo...

Unlike most, I don’t think that the worst is yet to come in Japan. Around 10% of our 600K hotspots in Japan went offline right after the earthquake/tsunami, we can now see that quite a few are coming back online. This can either mean that homes are getting fixed internet back or electricity back.

I want to especially thank @jfisbein, the Fon manager who right after the Japanese earthquake came up with the idea of opening the Fon network in Japan for all to use until the emergency is over.

Luego Leo duerme...
