Today I read that the Saudis just ordered the biggest arms purchase in history. $60bn. They convert an enormous part of their oil revenues into weapons instead of well being for their people or Muslim solidarity. As it stands Saudi Arabia is a monarchy that oppresses its own people, a Kingdom in which women can’t even legally ride a bicycle. Moreover all of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis as are most of those who finance a school system that teaches Muslim youth in the Middle East to hate us and our lifestyle.
As the $60bn in F15s arrive. How sure can we be that the next Osama Bin Laden (a Saudi) will not succeed in taking over those weapons?
When USA speaks about Ahmadenijad being such a threat and the Saudis such friends I hesitate. I, like most, worry about Iran’s foreign policy. But I take comfort in that Iran is still somewhat of a democracy and the Iranians may get rid of Ahmadinejad and evolve into a friendlier regime on their own. Iran is a country of people who mostly like us led by people who really hate us. Not a great mix. But I prefer it to that of Pakistan for example in which their leaders like us but their people hate us to the point that PEW polls show that Pakistanis would elect Osama Bin Laden as their leader. And Pakistan already has the atomic bomb.
As I see it, the Saudis only like us because we keep them wealthy and without having to share their wealth with their people. Saudi Arabia should play the role that say Germany played financing the economic development of Southern Europe. But instead the Saudis spend $60bn, an amount that would do wonders to offer employment opportunity to Muslim youth, in weapons.
